3 Reasons Why Your Air Filters Need Changing

A client’s Prius, taken by Fred Wilson of High Road Automotive Do you know what happens to your vehicle when you leave it parked outside for a year? Check out the photo above. It’s an actual photo of our client’s Prius, which was parked in the yard for a whole year and is now covered in moss! Our auto repair team has a lot of work ahead, for this hybrid has a dead battery, it is damp on the inside, and all fluids and filters need to be replaced. Fortunately, we see no evidence of a rat infestation, so that’s good.  But this vehicle brings up a point to discuss:  3 reasons why your air filters need to be changed. Air filters need to be changed regularly in your car’s engine and the interior cabin. But why? Well, let’s look at our bodies as an analogy and use a respiratory illness as an example.  When your respiratory system feels congested, it’s harder to take a deep breath, right? All that mucous can block your air passages a ... read more

Keeping Your Car's Engine Cool

Keeping Your Car's Engine Cool

Keep a cool head (engine head that is) Keeping your car’s engine cool is essential to having a car (and keeping it running). Every car is equipped with several gauges and lights that alert you when problems are cropping up with your engine. Perhaps the most important of them all is the temperature gauge, that quiet little gauge that never seems to change. It is so steady that it becomes tempting to ignore it, but you do that at your peril. The small changes in the temperature readout can indicate changes inside your engine that can cause serious trouble later. Your engine is designed to work best within a certain temperature range and the cooling system automatically flushes coolant throughout the engine to maintain that temperature. It doesn’t matter whether it is a hot summer day or an icy January morning, a properly function cooling system regulates the temperature to stay within the standard temperature range. What Can Go Wrong When your Car is Overheating Seve ... read more

What Safety Systems are in My Car?

What Safety Systems are in My Car?

Safety systems are more important for smaller cars Here at High Road, we love small cars like the Honda Civic and  Toyota Corolla.  These types of cars are nimble, reliable and easy on gas. Qualities that make them a commuter favorite. But small cars have a disadvantage in an accident;  they are lighter than most other cars and thus more vulnerable. It is important to take care of your safety systems regardless of how large your car is, but it is even more important if your car is small. The brakes are the most important and should be monitored for wear at least every other oil change, just like your tires.  Worn tires and brakes put you (and everyone else) at risk. Should your brakes feel spongy, or even just different, get them checked immediately. Failed brakes or tires turn your car into a missile and you are inside it.  SRS (airbag) systems and seat belts are the lifesavers when things go wrong. If the SRS light is on, have a technician check i ... read more

Why Honda is the Choice of High Road Automotive

Why Honda is the Choice of High Road Automotive

The Honda Difference What makes Honda one of the preferred brands of High Road Automotive? We were recently asked this question by a client who needed to replace their old car.  The client wanted to know which brand we, as mechanics, would recommend to them. Every automotive repair shop gets this question from time to time,  and we have a lot of fun answering it. The stated joke is always that it depends on our mood, what we had for breakfast and a thousand other variables that could influence our answer. But just for fun, I asked several members of our staff and I was surprised by the single answer that I got.   The answer at High Road Automotive was universally Honda.  However, there were some qualifications to this. Honda has a quality culture that goes far beyond just reliability and we rarely do major repairs. Craftsmanship The construction of the Honda automobile shows careful touches even in the places that are never seen by the v ... read more
